Gallery Protocol is pleased to present Under the Sun, an exhibition by artist and designer Michael Oliveri. Employing an impressive range of scientific, digital, and industrial processes, Oliveri creates works that question the limits of our understanding of the universe. A life-long surfer, Oliveri rides the wave of this threshold of knowledge - at the tipping point where science becomes pure phenomenon. And his multifaceted practice, at turns playful and sober, conveys the awe and wonder he experiences there. For Under the Sun, Oliveri revisits themes from previous exhibitions in which the terrestrial and extraterrestrial are brought together to evoke the post-terrestrial: asking us to consider the possible limits of human ingenuity against the limitlessness of what lies beyond ourselves and our planet. In Under the Sun hydroponics, systems of light, molecules, space-age materials, strange structures, sound and chemical compounds combine to create a dynamic, multi-sensory, and thought provoking installation.
Michael Oliveri is Associate Professor of ART X: Expanded Forms at the University of Georgia, Athens, GA. He recieved his MFA in New Genre from the University of California, Los Angeles and his BFA in Sculpture from the San Francisco Art Institute. He is the founder and lead designer at Michael Oliveri Studio (michaeloliveristudio.com)
